The goal of this 2-day hands-on training course is to enhance the dentists, hygienists, and the entire dental team the knowledge and understanding of the functions, proper techniques, and value that lasers bring to their patient care. The program’s purpose is to enable practices to immediately implement the safe and efficient use of the LightWalker and SkyPulse lasers into everyday patient care to obtain enhanced treatment outcomes. Lasers are an ideal treatment modality for many oral health care procedures, especially as it relates to periodontal and endodontic care. A thorough knowledge of the role and relationship of the laser’s wavelength, power, and temporal modes are key in obtaining the desired outcomes. Attendees will perform several laser exercises and simulated clinical procedures on porcine and other materials to provide an enhanced understanding of laser energy interactions with biological tissues.

Attendees will learn the proper techniques for patient care and how to assess the tissue interactions as they occur and how to adjust the laser parameters appropriately to attain the best possible outcomes. This program is designed to help facilitate the implementation of Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers into everyday use. It is specifically intended to assist attendees in maximizing the benefits these laser technologies provide for enhancing the quality of care provided by entire dental team. The objective of this workshop is to maximize the potential that lasers provide to the practice.

Participation Activities:

Participation activities will include the use of lasers on porcine tissue and other materials to learn and understand how the laser operates and performs. Attendees will perform simulated clinical treatments of the various laser procedures that are routinely performed by a dental clinician. A comprehensive discussion on the laser techniques and considerations when diagnosing, performing, and managing the outcomes of laser treatments will be included.

At the End of This Workshop, Attendees Should Have & Understand:

  • The benefits that dental lasers provide for patients and the practice.
  • The fundamentals of laser physics and the knowledge of how it relates to tissue interactions.
  • Sufficient knowledge on how to set and control the parameters of the laser.
  • How to explain and perform many of the procedures that can be performed with a laser
  • How to perform Laser Assisted Endodontic and Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT) procedures.

Materials Attendees Should Bring:

To maximize the attendees’ experience, it is recommended and encouraged that the participants should bring their corresponding laser protective eyewear. It is also recommended that the participants bring their magnification eyewear (loupes), and any corresponding laser filters that they have for their convenience. (If the clinician has not yet acquired the laser filters for their loupes, they can be purchased from National Dental Innovations at (800) 392-1171). Additional laser eyewear will be available for the attendees’ use.

The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers and most international regulatory agencies require all facilities utilizing a Class 4 (Surgical) or Class 3B (Therapeutic) laser to have a designated Laser Safety Officer (LSO) that has had comprehensive training on laser science, laser utilization, and safety.  More and more states are requiring the LSO to register with the state and provide verification of their formal laser safety training.  The LSO does not have to be a physician or dentist and is often a clinical auxiliary.  This program is specifically designed to provide the necessary training to meet the educational requirements for a LSO.

An additional goal is to enable the attendees to develop an appropriate laser safety program for their healthcare facilities that is increasingly becoming more stringent by the various regulatory agencies. The science of lasers, their classifications and terminology, and the components of a healthcare laser system (HCLS), and their potential dangers will be included in this presentation.

Safety concerns and considerations will focus on potential issues for both laser beam dangers and non-beam hazards including electrical, respiratory, and fire hazards, as well as, human factors, engineering controls, and safety mechanisms.  The LSO’s role and responsibilities will be discussed as well as the procedural and administrative controls that need to be in place at every healthcare facility where lasers are being utilized.

Course Objectives:

At the End of this Program Attendees Should Have and Understand:

  • An understanding of laser science and terminology
  • An understanding of the laser classifications
  • Knowledge of the potential beam and non-beam hazards of a laser
  • An understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Laser Safety Officer (LSO)
  • The ability to develop a laser safety program for their facility

*** This program meets the mandated educational component for the practice’s Laser Safety Officer

which is required for laser registration by some regulatory agencies***

Recommended audience:

  • Physicians & Dentists
  • Hygienists & Nurses
  • Clinical Auxiliaries
  • Anyone desiring to become a Laser Safety Officer

Advancing Dentistry with High-Performance Lasers

Date:                October 25, 2024

Location:         Toronto, ON, Canada

Speakers:        Scott D. Benjamin, DDS

Credit Hours:   1 hour of CDE Lecture Credit

This presentation is a scientific journey into the forefront of dental innovation and advancing  dentistry with the use of high-performance lasers. It will discuss the transformative power of high-powered dual wavelength Er:YAG 2,940nm and Nd:YAG 1,064nm free running lasers. The Er:YAG laser can seamlessly perform anesthetic-free restorative tooth preparations across multiple quadrants in a single appointment increasing revenues while decreasing time. The course will enlighten attendees on the value of the revolutionary Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photoacoustic Streaming (Fotona SWEEPS™) of the Er:YAG laser, expeditiously disinfecting root canal systems and elevating laser-activated irrigation in endodontics, surgery, implantology, and periodontics to enhance outcomes.

The synergistic roles of the Er:YAG and Nd:YAG wavelengths for soft tissue and periodontal procedures unlock unparalleled treatment possibilities. This program presents the scientific foundations behind these innovations, empowering the integration of high-performance laser technology with informed precision.

Course Objectives:

At the End of this Program Attendees Should Have and Understand:

  • Understand the intricate dynamics of laser energy and its interaction with biological tissue.
  • Explore the transformative impact of proper laser selection on treatment efficiency and outcomes.
  • Familiarize yourself with advanced laser procedures and their benefits for patients.
  • Recognize how appropriate laser technology enhances oral healthcare for practitioners and patients.
  • Appreciate the diversity within laser technologies, acknowledging their nuanced applications in dentistry.
