The Utilization of the Er:YAG & Nd:YAG Lasers in Dentistry

Locations:        Toronto, Ontario, Canada                                Dates: November 16-17, 2024

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada           Dates: March 1-2, 2025

Instructor:          Scott D. Benjamin, DDS

Credit Hours:    16 Hours of Participation  Credit

The goal of this 2-day hands-on training course is to enhance the dentists, hygienists, and the entire dental team the knowledge and understanding of the functions, proper techniques, and value that lasers bring to their patient care. The program’s purpose is to enable practices to immediately implement the safe and efficient use of the LightWalker and SkyPulse lasers into everyday patient care to obtain enhanced treatment outcomes. Lasers are an ideal treatment modality for many oral health care procedures, especially as it relates to periodontal and endodontic care. A thorough knowledge of the role and relationship of the laser’s wavelength, power, and temporal modes are key in obtaining the desired outcomes. Attendees will perform several laser exercises and simulated clinical procedures on porcine and other materials to provide an enhanced understanding of laser energy interactions with biological tissues.

Attendees will learn the proper techniques for patient care and how to assess the tissue interactions as they occur and how to adjust the laser parameters appropriately to attain the best possible outcomes. This program is designed to help facilitate the implementation of Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers into everyday use. It is specifically intended to assist attendees in maximizing the benefits these laser technologies provide for enhancing the quality of care provided by entire dental team. The objective of this workshop is to maximize the potential that lasers provide to the practice.

Participation Activities:

Participation activities will include the use of lasers on porcine tissue and other materials to learn and understand how the laser operates and performs. Attendees will perform simulated clinical treatments of the various laser procedures that are routinely performed by a dental clinician. A comprehensive discussion on the laser techniques and considerations when diagnosing, performing, and managing the outcomes of laser treatments will be included.

At the End of This Workshop, Attendees Should Have & Understand:

  • The benefits that dental lasers provide for patients and the practice.
  • The fundamentals of laser physics and the knowledge of how it relates to tissue interactions.
  • Sufficient knowledge on how to set and control the parameters of the laser.
  • How to explain and perform many of the procedures that can be performed with a laser
  • How to perform Laser Assisted Endodontic and Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT) procedures.

Materials Attendees Should Bring:

To maximize the attendees’ experience, it is recommended and encouraged that the participants should bring their corresponding laser protective eyewear. It is also recommended that the participants bring their magnification eyewear (loupes), and any corresponding laser filters that they have for their convenience. (If the clinician has not yet acquired the laser filters for their loupes, they can be purchased from National Dental Innovations at (800) 392-1171). Additional laser eyewear will be available for the attendees’ use.
